A pool table with six pockets, cue sticks, and sixteen billiard balls—a cue ball and fifteen objects balls is used to play eight-ball, also known as eightball, solids and stripes, spots and stripes, and, less frequently, highs and lows. The object balls consist of black 8 balls, seven balls with solid colors numbered 1 through 7, seven balls with stripes numbered 9 through 15, and seven solid-colored balls.

A player is given either the group of solid or striped balls if they have lawfully pocketed a ball from either group after the balls are spread with a break shot. The goal of the game is to legally pocket the 8-ball in a "called" pocket, which can only be done once all of the players have completed their turns.

The game is the most frequently played discipline of the pool, and is often thought of as synonymous with "pool". The game has numerous variations, mostly regional. It is the second most played professional pool game, after nine-ball, and for the last several decades, ahead of straight pool.
